Weekend Fun

20 Feb

I didn’t do a lot of cooking on Friday or Saturday because we had plans out.  First up was a trip to the Goodman on Friday night to see Mary

The play was…interesting.  Don’t go if you are easily offended (and it potentially offends just about everyone) or if you are in the mood for something light hearted.

Afterward, we decided to head over to Michigan Avenue to grab some late dinner.  Our initial plan was to go to the Purple Pig for some swine n’ wine but when we arrived, there was a 1.5 hour wait.  This was not going to work as we were all starving and hubs had an early morning.  The good thing is when you are on a night out with a bunch of young urban professionals armed with smartphones- a second plan is easily created.

iPhones out!

The second restaurant we walked to wanted to seat our party of seven at two different tables (lame) so we headed on with the help of iPhones again and ended up at Voltare, a bustling Italian restaurant on Grand.

I ordered the special which was white fish in a white wine sauce, gigantic mutant broccoli and potatoes and it was pretty good.  Drew’s gnocchi with vodka sauce was delicious.

Our plans for Saturday night included dinner at the Chicago Brauhaus in Logan Square with some friends.  I had never been here (or any brahaus) before and it was fantastic.

The atmosphere was awesome.  There was live music, gigantic beers being served, dancing and a very mixed crowd that included an elderly couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Logan Square hipsters, and families with small children who enjoyed dancing to the traditional German music.

We started with a giant pretzel that was out of this world good.

I ordered the boiled pork, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut.  We had to force ourselves to stop eating for fear that we wouldn’t be able to walk the two blocks to Old Town School of Music for the concert.

The music included some Elvis covers complete with costume and the YMCA sung in German…

After our German feast, we headed to the Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert at the Old Town School of Music which was excellent.

All in all, a pretty good weekend.  Not a lot of cooking but I plan to cook a nice dinner on Sunday.
